A journey of determination, a "complete reset," and a regional award—Tom Pearson’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of adult education.
At Barnet and Southgate College, we pride ourselves on "igniting careers and transforming workplaces" through our partnerships. Tom Pearson’s recent success as a Special Education Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant is a shining example of what happens when a student’s commitment meets the right support system.
Before embarking on his journey to become a Teaching Assistant (TA), Tom worked in the care sector. However, following a relationship breakdown, he moved from London to Dorset, seeking a "complete reset" in his professional life. While Tom was eager to find a new career, he knew a standard office or retail job wouldn’t satisfy his desire to help others. He decided to pursue a TA course but admitted to feeling "a bit daunted about being in learning again".
Like many adult learners, Tom initially worried about the academic side of returning to school, particularly the written assignments. Through the program, he earned his NCFE Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools & Colleges.
The course provided more than just a certificate; it gave Tom:
The results of Tom’s hard work were immediate. He secured a position as an SEN Teaching Assistant at The Forum School, part of the Cambian Group—one of the UK's leading specialist education providers. Tom’s impact on his students and colleagues has been remarkable. His employers note his "natural ability to connect with young people" and his commitment to person-centred support. His dedication didn't go unnoticed on a larger scale, either; Tom was named the Regional Winner of Newcomer of the Year at the ‘CareTech 2025’ Awards.
“Tom’s journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when determination meets the right support. He came to us ready for change, and through his commitment to learning and helping others, he’s gone on to achieve incredible success. We’re proud to support learners like Tom - people who don’t just change careers, but truly change lives.” - Christian Nicolaides, Director of Employer Partnerships Barnet Southgate College
“Since joining Cambian’s The Forum School this year, Thomas has truly thrived. He has embraced every challenge with positivity, curiosity, and determination, showing a natural ability to connect with young people and support them in meaningful, person-centred ways.
Tom consistently asks thoughtful questions, learns from experienced staff, and applies new strategies with confidence. His willingness to step in whenever needed, shows a level of commitment and compassion that truly sets him apart.” - Cambian Group
