Accessibility statement 

This statement applies to www.barnetsouthgate.ac.uk. 

Barnet and Southgate College is committed to making its website accessible in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. 

Compliance status 

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard due to the accessibility issues described below. 

The current website was assessed in April 2026 against WCAG 2.1 AA. The issues identified remain applicable under WCAG 2.2 AA and have been mapped to the relevant WCAG 2.2 success criteria. The website has not yet undergone a full WCAG 2.2 AA audit. This assessment was based on a review of the website's underlying code; manual testing using a keyboard alone and with screen-reading software has not yet been completed and is planned as a next step.  

Known accessibility issues 

We know that some parts of the website are not fully accessible. These include: 

Images and non-text content 

Some images, including the website logo and accreditation logos, do not contain suitable alternative text. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content.  

Page structure and navigation 

Some pages do not use appropriate page landmarks and navigation structures, making navigation more difficult for users of assistive technologies. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships.  

Keyboard accessibility 

Some navigation menus and interactive controls cannot be fully operated using a keyboard. The website also does not currently provide a skip link to allow users to bypass repeated navigation. 

These issues do not meet WCAG 2.2 success criteria: 

• 2.1.1 Keyboard 
• 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks 

Focus visibility 

Some interactive elements do not display a visible keyboard focus indicator. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.7 Focus Visible.  

Colour contrast 

Some links within the cookie banner do not have sufficient colour contrast. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum).  

Labels and instructions 

Some form controls and search fields do not have correctly associated labels. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions.  

Name, role and value 

Some buttons and controls do not provide appropriate accessible names, roles or labels for assistive technologies. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value.  

Motion and animation 

Some animated content does not respect a user's reduced-motion preferences. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.3.3 Animation from Interactions.  

Links that open in a new window 

Some links, including social media links, open in a new browser tab without warning users in advance. 

This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context).  

Documents 

Some older PDF and Office documents may not be fully accessible. 

Documents published before 23 September 2018 may be exempt from the accessibility regulations unless they are needed to access a service. [gov.uk]

What we are doing to improve accessibility 

Barnet and Southgate College is currently redeveloping its website, with launch planned for October 2026. 

Accessibility has been incorporated into the redevelopment process and the new website will be tested against WCAG 2.2 AA before launch. Any issues identified through testing will be prioritised for remediation before and after launch as appropriate. 

Some issues — particularly those requiring structural changes to site-wide navigation and template markup — are being addressed through the website redevelopment rather than retrofitted into the legacy platform, as the current platform is due to be replaced in October 2026. Lower-cost fixes, such as colour contrast and accessible names for controls, are being prioritised for remediation on the current site in the meantime. 

While the current website remains in service, we will continue to address reasonable and proportionate accessibility improvements and provide alternative formats on request.

Preparation of this statement 

This statement was prepared on 21 September 2026. 

It is based on an accessibility assessment carried out in April 2026 against WCAG 2.1 AA, together with a review of the findings against WCAG 2.2 AA success criteria.  

This statement will be reviewed following completion of a full WCAG 2.2 AA audit of the replacement website prior to launch.
