At Barnet and Southgate College, we offer ESOL courses from beginner to advanced levels, taught by experienced and supportive tutors in a welcoming learning environment. Our courses help students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, while building confidence for employment, further study, and everyday life.
We offer courses across several campuses, with daytime, evening, and part-time study options available.

Our ESOL courses are suitable for:

Course Options
Our Adult ESOL, ESOL Vocational, and Young ESOL courses are delivered across four campuses, with a range of part-time and online study options available throughout the week. Courses run on a termly basis, with enrolment periods typically taking place in August/September and January/April.
We offer a range of study options, including:
1. YESOL: English courses for 16 - 18-year-olds (all campuses)
2. Adult part-time ESOL (all campuses)
2. ESOL Vocational: Our learners can study ESOL whilst learning about the following subjects:
- ESOL Health & Social Care – 16- 18-year-olds & Adults
- ESOL with Childcare – 16- 18-year-olds & Adults
After you apply, you will be invited to attend an initial assessment, where we will determine your English level and discuss the most suitable course, campus, and timetable options for you. Our team will then guide you through the next steps of the enrolment process.

How to Join an ESOL Course
Step 1: Choose Your Preferred Campus
Please apply for the ESOL course at the campus closest to where you live.

Step 2: Select a Course and Apply Online
From the list of courses in the right-hand column, select the course at your preferred campus and click Apply Online to submit your application. You can also watch the video below for a step-by-step guide on how to complete your online application.
Step 3: Wait for Contact from the ESOL Team
Once you have submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email. As soon as a suitable place becomes available, a member of the ESOL team will contact you to arrange an initial assessment and explain the next steps, including course options, timetable availability, and enrolment.
Step 4: Attend an assessment and complete your enrolment
You will be invited to attend an ESOL assessment, which includes reading, writing, and speaking activities and typically takes approximately one hour to complete. Following the assessment, our ESOL team will discuss your results with you, recommend the most suitable course and level, and guide you through the enrolment process.

Are ESOL courses free?
All Young ESOL courses (for learners aged 16–18) are free. For Adult ESOL courses, some students may be eligible for free or funded study, depending on their circumstances. Please contact us for advice on fees and funding.
What level should I study?
You do not need to know your English level before applying. We will assess your English skills and recommend the most suitable course and level for you.
Do I need to provide any documents?
Yes. You will need to bring identification and any relevant supporting documents. Before your enrolment appointment, a member of our team will contact you with information about the documents you need to bring.
Are evening classes available?
Yes, evening classes are available for Adult ESOL courses. Available study options and timetables will be discussed following your initial assessment.
Can I study part-time?
Yes, part-time study options are available for Adult ESOL courses. Young ESOL courses (for learners aged 16–18) are delivered during the daytime and typically run four days per week.
Do you offer online learning?
We offer some blended learning options. These can be discussed during your initial assessment to determine the most suitable study option for you.
Is childcare support available?
After enrolling, eligible students may apply for financial support through the Learner Support Fund to help with childcare costs.
How long are the courses?
Course lengths vary depending on the programme and level. ESOL courses are delivered on a termly basis, with new enrolment opportunities throughout the academic year.
What happens after ESOL?
After successfully completing an ESOL course, students may have the opportunity to progress to a range of vocational programmes, including Computing, Business, and Teaching Assistant courses (for adult learners only), depending on their level and individual progression goals.
Following completion of Young ESOL courses at Level 1 and Level 2, students aged 16–18 typically progress to mainstream college courses at Level 1 or Level 2.
Students who hold overseas school qualifications may have their certificates translated and assessed by the College. Depending on their previous qualifications and English language ability, they may be eligible to progress directly to higher-level mainstream courses.
