British Science Week sparks curiosity with student chemistry showcase

Teaching staff were treated to a lively and hands-on celebration of British Science Week as T Level Laboratory Science students hosted a special event to demonstrate the experiments they’ve been working on throughout their course.

The showcase highlighted the broad, practical nature of the T Level science programme, with students guiding staff through a range of experiments that brought classroom theory to life. From testing reactions to building working scientific demonstrations, the event showed just how much learning happens through practical investigation.

Among the practical experiment demonstrations were the creative fruit and vegetable clocks. Students demonstrated how chemical reactions can generate electricity using everyday food items.

A challenge with prizes was also hosted for students to name all the elements in the Periodic table, which became highly competitive.

Student Pharrel (17), who studies T Level Laboratory Science, explained the elephant toothpaste experiment to visitors. He also highlighted how much practical experience students gain during the course, adding: “We have practicals every week as part of our T Level – it’s a very enjoyable course.”

Student Ava also shared how much she enjoys the course, explaining that the wide variety of practical work is among her highlights. She hopes the skills she’s developing in the lab will help her progress to studying medicine in the future.

Classmate Clare also spoke about the opportunities the course provides. After completing her T Level, she plans to continue her journey into healthcare by training in paediatric nursing, inspired by the scientific knowledge and practical experience she’s gaining through the programme.

 

The event captured the spirit of British Science Week - curiosity and experimentation, with students having the opportunity to demonstrate their technical skills and enthusiasm for future careers in science and healthcare.

Events like this highlight how practical science education helps students build confidence, develop real laboratory skills and explore the many exciting paths science can lead to.
