T-Level investment: Inspiring the future generation of Scientists

As part of an exciting pilot initiative in 2024, Barnet and Southgate College joined forces with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to enhance our T Level program in Healthcare Science. This collaboration provides students with a unique opportunity to bridge academic learning with practical laboratory experience, preparing them for future careers in science and healthcare.

Industry Exposure

Through our collaboration with UKHSA, two students were given placements within the prestigious Gastrointestinal Bacteria Reference Unit (GBRU), working alongside the Central Sample Reception (CSR) team and the Scientific Learning and Talent (SL&T) team. This immersive experience provided students with firsthand insight into the variety of samples UKHSA processes daily, as well as essential laboratory techniques and professional skills.

Training Program

A structured training plan was developed to ensure students gained exposure to a wide range of laboratory skills, including

▪️UKHSA mandatory training for laboratory staff.

▪️Molecular techniques.

▪️Sample processing within the Central Sample Reception (CSR) team.

▪️Electron microscopy, led by expert Matthew Hannah.

▪️Fundamental laboratory techniques such as pipetting and plating.

▪️An overview of health, safety, and quality protocols in a laboratory environment.

▪️Professional development, including CV writing, job application guidance, and interview techniques.

Our T Level students described their experience as “Inspiring, Organised, and Efficient,” emphasizing the value of practical, hands-on learning at UKHSA. Their overwhelmingly positive feedback highlights the success of this pilot initiative in bridging the gap between education and industry.
