If you are focused on a career working with children and want to achieve a qualification which will enable you to seek employment in the early years sector, then this is the course for you. This one-year qualification is designed to prepare you for employment as a qualified Early Years Practitioner in the childcare sector upon completion. This qualification will prepare you to work with children aged 0-5 years through practical work experience in a nursery setting for part of the week and to gain knowledge and understanding of working with children up to 7 years of age by completing activities in the classroom and submitting a range of assignments.

What qualifications or experience do I need?
A genuine interest in a career working with children. You will need a minimum Grade 3 GCSE in English Language and Mathematics. A Functional Skill Level 2 in English and Mathematics is also accepted.
Evidence of work experience with children is desirable and due to the intensity of this course ideally you will have completed the Level 2 NCFE CACHE Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner prior to this.
What will I study ?
You can expect to complete modules on the following subjects: child development, supporting children with additional learning needs and disabilities, curriculum planning, the role and value of play, supporting healthy lifestyles, supporting children who are unwell, health and safety and safeguarding legislation, emotional well-being, supporting children through transitions, cognitive development, mathematics, literacy and professional development. Students will take part in a mandatory work placement, where they will gain practice experience working with young children in settings such as nurseries, preschools or primary schools. Placement is essential for developing confidence and competence in working with children. In addition to child development, you will be enrolled on to either a GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and / or English if you have not achieved a minimum grade 4 at GCSE.

Externally Assed Units (Exam or Set Task) · Children’s Development (Exam) · Supporting Children’s Play (Controlled Assessment) Internally Assessed Units (Coursework) · Observation, Assessment and planning · Promoting Children’s Development Assessment methods include written assignments, presentations, case studies and placement-based tasks. As part of this course, you are required to complete a DBS check. You can expect to spend half of your week at college attending classes and the other half at work placement.
