American Football Academy

A unique programme developed by Barnet and Southgate College to give aspiring young American football players or outstanding athletes the chance to develop their skills and knowledge of the game

Our American football programme is combined with full time education with the goal to be NCAA eligible for US College acceptance.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The BSC American Football Academy links high quality professional coaching with an extensive range of full time academic or A Level sports study programmes, for learners aged between 16 to 18 years old (on August 31st of that academic year).

Learners of varying abilities and experiences can enrol on full time BTEC Level 1, 2 and 3 courses, a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, NVQ Level 2 Coaching, YMCA Personal Training courses or an A Level study package.

OVERVIEW

Run in partnership with Tony Allen, the team of highly qualified and experienced coaches will deliver the coaching and technical components of the American Football Academy programme, ensuring a detailed sporting content that incorporates coaching in all technical, tactical and physical facets and caters to every position on the field for both offensive and defensive players.

The student athletes will train at least 3 times per week over 44 weeks of the year in field-based practice sessions, with video analysis and classroom-based work conducted before each practice. Additional physical conditioning programmes will be written for each player which they can complete in the BSC gym facilities.

Students will be transported from the Southgate Campus to field practice training facilities each day. All playing equipment inclusive of helmets, pads and training wear will be provided and each student athlete shall receive Nike American Football programme team wear and leisurewear at no cost. The only items of equipment student athletes will have to pay for are cleats and gum shields.

Student athletes, as part of this scheme, will access an exciting, high quality study programme, encompassing the main qualification (sports or A Levels), English and/or maths (where required), employability skills and Sport National Governing Body Coaching awards.

Learners who enrol on the course will be required to sign a code of conduct, and will not be allowed to train or play football unless they are up-to-date with their academic commitments and maintain the highest possible standards.

Additional benefits include access to a full-time team of physiotherapists, and clinic sessions will be available for all student athletes, as well as free gym access to the College's performance gym which has strength and conditioning support.

GOALS AND PROGRESSION ROUTES

The programme has been designed to provide athletic sporting performance coaching in American football together with Further Education. This is a unique offer, not only for the UK, but also internationally - providing the only programmes of this kind outside of the US and North American High School system..

The American Football Academy is looking for talented American football players, or cross-over athletes who haven’t played the sport. The combination of high-quality sports and academic training is intended to help students achieve NCAA Scholarship offers to Division 1 or 2 US Colleges. Alternatively, students may wish to play the game to high levels with NGB national teams, British universities or European Leagues.
