What is the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan Bursary and who is eligible?
Loans are one way which learners aged 19 or over on 1 August 2018 can fund Level 3 or Level 4 courses. To apply for a loan, the student must be accepted onto a course which has been designated by the Education and Skills Funding Agency as approved for loans.
The 19+ Bursary fund is available only to students who have a 19+ loan. It cannot be used to pay fees.
As the fund is limited, it is allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
19+ Bursary support for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities (additional learning support):
Following assessment in line with existing College policy, support up to a value of £2000 per year will be available to all loans learners who need it. Support above that level will be available subject to a decision made by two managers. This will include a financial decision based on whether the College can afford reasonable adjustments, and the Equality Act.
For ALS funding support you will need to apply directly to the ALS department.
19+ Bursary support for students who have difficulty meeting the costs of attending their course - for example, help with childcare and travel (discretionary learner support)
Some support is available for non-essential costs such as childcare and travel. This will be means-tested and limited in line with College policy on discretionary learner support and childcare funding. Support up to £1000 per year will be available to all loans learners, subject to means and needs testing. Support above that level will be available subject to a decision made by two managers. This will include a financial decision based on whether the College can afford the costs, and the Equality Act.
Apprentices: Apprentices can apply for support, but it is expected by the College and the Skills Funding Agency that employers of apprentices will usually meet the costs of additional support.
