This course is General Dental Council (GDC) approved and is subject to their continual Quality Assurance Processes. A course for those working in, or planning to work in the Dental Technology industry. If you wish to explore new dental technologies to inform career aspirations and be challenged and stimulated for academic and practical development then this may be the course for you.
Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprentices. You will hold a relevant and supporting Level 3 qualification, including five GCSEs at grade C (4/5) or above (or equivalent), including English, mathematics and a science. Students will also be required to undertake a manual dexterity test. Alternatively a Level 3 Diploma in Dental Technology with a 'merit' grade profile, or applicants from other dental team roles who can present evidence of level 3 qualifications will be considered.
This course covers the fundamental aspects of oral anatomy, physiology and its influence on dental appliance design. It introduces the basic dental technology techniques which involve the construction of simple appliances from each technology discipline. It includes a dental biomaterials module, which is directly linked to materials used in practical projects, building on themes by studying and developing work based competency in fixed and removable prosthodontics. And a professional practice module which covers the behaviours and regulatory demands needed to be a successful dental care professional.
Assessment is through a variety of methods designed to meet the learning outcomes required by the General Dental Council, including work specific modules which are designed to developed all practical aspects of dental technology.
Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship in Dental Technology. Successful Higher Apprentices may progress on to the Top Up Year of the BSc (Hons) Dental Technology, a joint programme with the University of Bolton.
