These courses are for Adult Part Students. We run classes in the Evening, on Saturday and some daytime during the week. Note - Improve Your English is not ESOL. All courses are free unless you already have a GCSE grade A-C or 4-9 and want to retake to gain a higher grade. The fee for this is £750 per GCSE.

Experience of GCSE Maths is helpful but not necessary. We will assess your existing Maths skills in order to make sure we enrol you on a course that is right for you, through a 45 minute assessment test. If you pass this assessment, you can enrol onto our GCSE Maths course. If you do not pass, we will offer you a place on one of our Functional Skills courses which can build your skills and knowledge towards being ready for the demands of GCSE, potentially the following year. The assessment test focuses on the key mathematical topics a GCSE Maths student will be expected to study and succeed in. These include: problem solving, arithmetic, algebra, probability, shape and space, long division and multiplication, Pythagoras and other relevant aspects of GCSE Maths.

The GCSE Maths course packs a lot of learning into one academic year. You will develop your maths skills by studying subjects such as Numbers, Statistics, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Geometry and Measures and Probability. We try to make studying GCSE Maths an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone and hope that although challenging for many people, the subject is taught in an engaging and interesting way. It is very important that you tell your GCSE Maths lecturer immediately, if you are having difficulties with the course.

Assessment is through three end of year, equally weighted exam papers. Exams are sat at either Foundation or Higher Tier level; the tier you sit will be decided according to your performance during the year and following discussion about your progress with your lecturer. Your final grade will be awarded as a number from 1-9, with a Grade 4/5 being roughly equivalent to the old Grade C. At Foundation Tier, you can achieve a maximum Grade 5 and at Higher Tier, you can aim for the maximum Grade 9.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a qualification in GCSE Mathematics from the Pearson/Edexcel examinations board.

Please complete an application and return to the College - either online, by post, or in person at a College campus.

Yes. It is very important that a trained professional Maths lecturer is able to advise and guide you in your best interests. If it emerges that GCSE Maths is not suitable for you, you will be referred to an Adult Functional Skills course to make sure that your Maths improves, making you more ready for the demands of GCSE Maths in the future.

You will need to purchase copies of the set course texts (these will be announced when you start the course) and provide basic stationery such as A4 lined notepads, pens etc. You will also need to provide a scientific calculator and geometry set including compass, protractor, ruler and set square. The end of year Exam fee is an ADDITIONAL COST unless included in the course fees. Please note: GCSE Maths is FREE to applicants who DO NOT have a grade C (4/5) or above. However for those who DO have a grade C (4/5) or above and wish to IMPROVE their grade, there will be a charge.
