This course is designed for newly-registered childminders or those proceeding through the registration process with their local authority, and is structured to prepare applicants to work as home-based child carers/childminders. Students must be 19 years and over to apply. As well as learning relevant aspects of childcare, this unit supports the development of policies and procedures relevant to registration and basic business skills for childminding. The qualification prepares those who wish to set up a home based childcare setting. It is also suitable for learners who want to be employed in home based childcare settings, such as, childminding assistant, nanny or au pair.
You must have literacy skills at level 2 or above and obtain Level 2 in the Literacy Skills Builder online assessment.
The major subject areas you will study are: Understanding how to set up a home based childcare service (CYPOP5); Understanding how to establish a safe and healthy home based environment for children; Understanding the principles of development of routines for home based childcare; Understanding how to provide play and other activities for children in a home based setting, supporting equality and inclusion; Understanding how home based child carers can support the safeguarding of children in their care; Understanding the principles of supporting positive behaviour in a home based childcare setting.
There will be an online exam at the end of the course.

100% attendance is essential to fulfil the requirements of the course. If you miss a session or do not pass the online exam, you will be required to re-study the course and pay additional fees. Ofsted requirements for Childminding also includes the necessity to hold a paediatric first aid qualification, which is offered at the College for an additional fee.
