The Learning Disability Department at Barnet and Southgate College is established as an ‘outstanding’ leading provider of learning disability provision for young people.
Our service successfully delivers specialist educational programmes to more than 180 students with learning disabilities. We offer a specialist curriculum that is flexible and individualised, providing pathways of learning from school and progression to main College programmes, work training, employment, supported living and the local community.
Our Supported Leaning staff team has considerable experience, and all share a passion for progressing the learning and life chances of students with learning difficulties and disabilities. Inclusion and the opportunity to progress in College, community and the world of work are at the core of our beliefs and values.
Alongside a full and varied programme of study, we have an extensive work experience and employability programme. This includes the innovative ‘Steps Into Work’ programme in partnership with Remploy and Transport for London where students complete a full work year and take part in both office based and practical (e.g. platform, ticket work) placements with London Underground. Through this programme 35% of learners achieved employment (national average is 25% for LLDD), 90% progressed to work or further training and education and 100% achieved the BTEC Work Skills qualification.
Other outstanding partnerships include Ambitious About Autism, enabling school leavers with significant and complex autism to access College facilities and courses. We also work closely with Local Authorities and Special Schools and have produced a joint curriculum project with the local authority. This has enabled us to plan successfully for High Needs Students and achieve significant HNS (High Needs Students) funding for 2013-14.
The environment in which LLDD students are educated is critical for outstanding results, the facilities that enable them to function and achieve in that environment is key to that success. This is why Barnet and Southgate College has opened a brand new, state-of-the-art, life-changing Centre of Excellence dedicated to students with special educational needs and complex learning difficulties.
This pioneering venture for North London opened in September 2014 and is the first purpose-built college centre in the area providing specialist education facilities which are totally dedicated to the specific needs of students with learning disabilities.
We look forward to welcoming you all!
